The 4th of July is one of the most fun holidays of the year — unless you're a pet.

**More pets go missing on July 4th than any other day of the year.** Animal shelters across the country report their highest intake of lost and scared animals in the days following Independence Day. Fireworks are the \#1 trigger.

Here in Texas, where neighborhoods light up with fireworks for days before and after the holiday, it's worth taking this seriously before it becomes an emergency.

### Why Fireworks Hit Pets So Hard

Dogs and cats can hear frequencies humans can't — and at volumes that feel genuinely painful to them. What sounds like a fun pop to us can sound like a bomb going off right next to them.

When a pet panics, their instinct is to run. Fences get jumped. Doors get pushed open. Leashes get pulled free. And a scared dog in full flight mode doesn't respond to their name — they just run.

### Before the 4th: Prep Your Pet

**Update your pet's ID tags right now.** If they're lost and someone finds them, a current phone number is what brings them home. Check that the tag is readable and the number is current.

**Microchip your pet if you haven't.** Tags can fall off. Microchips don't. If your pet is taken to a shelter or vet after being found, a microchip scan is how they identify the owner. It's inexpensive and worth every penny.

**Take a fresh photo of your pet this week.** If they go missing, you'll need a clear, recent photo to share on social media and with shelters. Do it now while you're thinking about it.

**Talk to your vet about anxiety options.** For pets with severe anxiety, there are safe, vet\-approved medications and supplements that can take the edge off. Don't wait until July 3rd — some options need to be started in advance.

**Create a safe space indoors.** A crate, a closet, a bathroom — somewhere your pet can go that feels enclosed and secure. Add familiar bedding and their favorite toys.

### On July 4th: Keep Them Safe

**Keep pets indoors during fireworks.** Even if your dog loves the backyard and has never escaped before — don't risk it. Panic overrides everything.

**Don't bring pets to fireworks shows.** We know they're cute in the photos. But no pet enjoys a fireworks display. Leave them home.

**Keep doors and windows closed.** A scared pet can push through a screen door faster than you'd expect.

**Don't leave pets alone if you can help it.** Having someone home with them — even just in the same room — makes a big difference.

**Turn on the TV or play music.** Background noise helps mask the sound of fireworks and keeps pets calmer.

**Never let pets near fireworks debris.** Firework casings, unlit fireworks, and residue are all toxic to animals if ingested.

### The Insurance Side of This

Here's something most people don't think about: if your pet is injured — by fireworks debris, a panicked run into traffic, or any other 4th of July hazard — standard homeowners and renters insurance typically does **not** cover veterinary bills.

Emergency vet care can run into the thousands of dollars quickly. Pet insurance is a separate policy that covers those costs — and July is a great time to look into it before the holiday hits.
