Motorcycle Insurance in Texas: What Every Rider Needs to Know

By Krystel Huerta · Reviewed by Krystel Huerta, licensed Texas insurance agent, TX License #1922044

There's nothing like riding in Texas. Wide open highways, warm weather almost year-round, and some of the best scenic routes in the country.

But here's the thing most riders don't want to talk about — motorcycle accidents are significantly more dangerous than car accidents, and most riders are underinsured.

Let's fix that.

Texas Law Only Requires the Minimum

Texas requires motorcycle riders to carry liability insurance — just like car drivers. The state minimums are 30/60/25: $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident, $25,000 for property damage.

Sound familiar? That's because it's the same minimum as auto insurance.

And just like with auto insurance — state minimums are not enough.

A serious motorcycle accident can generate medical bills well beyond those limits. Anything above your coverage comes out of your pocket personally.

What Most Riders Are Missing

Liability covers damage you cause to others. But what about YOU?

Here's what many motorcycle policies skip — and what you should seriously consider:

Collision Coverage pays to repair or replace your bike if you're in an accident, regardless of fault. If you've put real money into your ride, this matters.

Comprehensive Coverage protects against theft, vandalism, hail, and fire. Motorcycles are stolen far more often than cars. Texas hail is no joke either.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage is critical. Texas has one of the highest rates of uninsured drivers in the country. If an uninsured driver takes you out, UM coverage is what protects you.

Medical Payments Coverage helps pay your medical bills after an accident — regardless of who was at fault. Given that riders face more serious injuries, this is one I always recommend.

Roadside Assistance — because breaking down on the side of a Texas highway on a motorcycle is a different situation than breaking down in a car.

The Custom Parts Problem

Got aftermarket exhaust? Custom handlebars? A paint job you paid real money for?

Standard motorcycle policies often cover your bike at its stock value — not what you've actually invested in it. If you've modified your ride, you may need additional coverage specifically for custom parts and equipment.

Don't assume your $8,000 in upgrades are covered. Ask specifically.

Seasonal Riders: Don't Drop Coverage

Some riders drop their insurance during winter months to save money. This feels smart until your bike gets stolen from your garage in January.

Comprehensive coverage protects your bike even when it's parked. If you want to save money in the off-season, talk to us about adjusting your coverage — don't eliminate it entirely.

Gear Is Not Covered by Your Bike's Policy

Your helmet, jacket, gloves, and boots? Your motorcycle policy doesn't cover those if they're damaged in an accident. Some policies offer optional equipment coverage — worth asking about if your gear represents real money.

The Bottom Line for Texas Riders

Riding is freedom. But riding without the right coverage is a gamble with your finances, your bike, and your future.

The good news? Motorcycle insurance is often more affordable than people expect — especially when you bundle it with your auto or home policy.
